Introduction
This report shows that mental health is a major driver of gym and leisure participation, with 14% of adults reporting a mental health condition. Women, younger adults and people in lower social grades are most affected and face greater barriers—especially cost, confidence and feeling uncomfortable. Physical activity is seen as vital for wellbeing, yet these groups are less active and less likely to hold memberships. Many would join if bespoke mental‑health support or employer‑subsidised access were offered, but awareness of existing programmes is low.
