ukactive has issued the following statement in response to the Chancellor’s Autumn Budget and the publication of the Government’s High Street Strategy today (Wednesday 28 October).

Clemency Lion, Director of Policy, Research and Communications at ukactive, said: “Between today’s Budget announcements and the publication of the Government’s High Streets Strategy, we are pleased to see some long overdue acknowledgement of the vital role played by gyms, leisure centres and swimming pools in driving economic growth and creating healthier communities up and down the country.

“We particularly welcome the Chancellor’s reference to gyms in his speech when announcing measures on business rates for retail, hospitality and leisure, as well as the recognition of fitness facilities as anchor businesses for high streets, driving footfall and growth.

“However, this Budget has fallen short of its commitment to deliver breathing room for businesses. The notable absence of support on staffing costs or energy bills is disappointing, and more work is needed on business rates to support the wider sector. Without this, businesses will continue to feel the strain and many will be forced to choose between reducing services, cutting staffing or raising prices.

“If the Government is serious about delivering growth in every postcode, it must stop being a blocker and start being an enabler of our sector, unlocking its potential to boost physical activity, relieve pressure on the NHS, keep people healthy enough to work, and address economic inactivity.”
