Position overview

ukactive is a commercially minded not-for-profit body comprised of members and partners from across the UK physical activity sector. Our focus is a long-standing and uncompromising vision to get more people, more active, more often.

The Finance and Resources Committee at ukactive is responsible for all areas of financial, governance and risk management at the organisation, and plays a key role in the ukactive governance structure, providing assurance to the Board following each meeting.

The Committee is responsible for ensuring the integrity of the financial statements of the organisation and reporting to the Board on any significant financial reporting issues or judgements,  reviewing the organisation’s internal control and risk management systems, all matters concerning the external audit, ensuring there are adequate resources to deliver the Busienss Plan, reviewing operational KPIs for HR and IT, and reviewing systems and controls in relation to HR and IT, including ensuring that adequate security arrangements are in place to protect systems from external security threats 

We are looking for an individual with demonstrable financial acumen and a passion for physical activity and the benefits the sector delivers to join our Finance and Resources Committee to challenge and support the staff team as appropriate.

Specific tasks and responsibilities

  • Ensuring that the organisation has appropriate risk management controls in place and that risks are reviewed on a regular basis.
  • Ensuring the competence, effectiveness, independence and objectivity of external auditors.
  • Scrutinising accounting and risk management and governance policies, ensuring the robustness of each.
  • Ensuring that the organisation is adhering to accounting standards and recommend the annual accounts and accounting policies to the Board for approval
  • To keep informed about the activities of the organisation, the wider sector and any issues with affect the organisations work.
  • To declare any potential conflicts of interest while carrying out the duties of an Independent Committee Member.

In addition to the duties of all committee members, each Independent Committee Member should use any specific skills, knowledge or experience they have to help the committee reach sound decisions.

Personal specification

  • Demonstrable financial acumen – this could be through a formal qualification or through financial management experience
  • Understanding of strategic and operational risk management
  • Knowledge of governance principles
  • Experience at senior level in a business environment
  • An ability to think in a strategic, innovative, modern, agile and flexible way
  • An interest in the physical activity sector and the work undertaken by ukactive
  • A willingness to devote the necessary time and effort to fulfil the duties of a committee member
  • Experience in the not for profit sector (desirable)
