This is our Active Standard

The quality mark for safety, trust, and excellence in every fitness and leisure facility.

Developed by ukactive with leading sector partners, The Active Standard (TAS) sets the benchmark for operational quality, compliance, and risk management across the UK physical activity sector — helping you build safer, more trusted, and more resilient organisations.

What is The Active Standard?

The Active Standard (TAS) is a nationally recognised certification that ensures your facilities meet the standards necessary to deliver safe, inclusive, and high-quality experiences for your customers.

Built in collaboration with organisations including Sport England, CIMSPA, Right Directions and EuropeActive, The Active Standard is a baseline certification that confirms your compliance with UK law and regulation while demonstrating your commitment to raising standards across the sector.

It’s designed for all operator types — public, private, or independent — and provides a clear framework for achieving and maintaining operational excellence.

Key benefits:

  • Demonstrates commitment to safety and inclusion
  • Builds consumer trust and confidence
  • Strengthens your reputation and brand
  • Reduces operational and reputational risk
  • Supports public health partnership opportunities
  • Ensures compliance with UK law and regulations

How does it work?

The Active Standard certification process is designed to be straightforward, supportive, and impactful.

1. Enrolment

All ukactive operator members are automatically enrolled as part of their membership, free of charge. You’ll be contacted by the ukactive team to begin your journey based on your membership renewal date.

2. Assessment

The assessment is conducted online by an independent assessor from Right Directions and takes around 2–2.5 hours.

It covers 40 core questions on:

  • Health and safety compliance
  • Safeguarding protocols
  • Professional standards
  • Data protection

You’ll have up to six months to submit any follow-up evidence if needed.

3. Certification

Successful operators receive:

  • digital certificate to display at your site(s)
  • Access to digital and print assets to promote your achievement
  • Inclusion on ukactive’s internal register of certified operators

Certification is valid for three years, after which reassessment is required to maintain your status.

4. Support every step of the way

You’ll receive guidance materials, webinars (live or recorded), and ongoing support from ukactive and our assessment partners to ensure you’re fully prepared and confident in the process.
