More than a hundred health and fitness operators have now achieved certification to The Active Standard (TAS), ukactive’s quality mark for gyms, leisure centres and swimming pools.
In this blog, Paul Stephenson, Operations Director at Lift Brands (franchisor of Snap Fitness), shares how becoming TAS-certified has enabled the private operator to demonstrate externally the organisation’s commitment to standards, safety and quality.
What motivated your organisation to achieve The Active Standard (TAS), and what have been the biggest benefits since becoming certified?
Achieving The Active Standard was important to us because we wanted to be part of an industry-recognised standard that demonstrates our commitment to excellence.
As a franchise business, ensuring consistency and compliance across our network is a key priority, and The Active Standard provided an excellent framework to strengthen and develop this further.
It has also enabled us to demonstrate to both prospective members and potential franchisees that we take operational standards, safety and quality seriously.
One of the biggest benefits since becoming certified has been the positive impact on our own internal compliance processes. The Active Standard has helped shape and enhance our approach to compliance across the network, providing greater consistency and giving us confidence that our clubs are operating to the highest possible standards.
How did you find the assessment process, and what was your experience of working through the certification?
We found the assessment process to be extremely thorough, which gave us confidence in the credibility and value of the certification.
Throughout the process, we felt well supported by the team, who were always approachable, knowledgeable and willing to provide guidance whenever required.
Working towards certification was a positive experience, and the support we received helped ensure the process was both collaborative and constructive.
What advice would you give to another operator that is about to undertake The Active Standard assessment?
My advice would be not to worry if you are unsure about certain aspects of the assessment. The team are incredibly supportive and will take the time to explain the requirements clearly, answer any questions you have and ensure you understand what is needed.
They also provided sufficient time to gather and submit the required evidence, making the process far less daunting than you might initially expect.
Approach it as an opportunity to strengthen your business, rather than simply an assessment, and you will gain significant value from the experience.
