Earlier this week, MPs and Ministers in the House of Commons pledged to “look at every opportunity” to offer children the chance to be active beyond the traditional school day in response to ukactive Research.

On Monday afternoon, ukactive worked with Justin Tomlinson MP, Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group for Sport, to highlight the harmful impact that inactive summer holidays can have on children’s health in a Parliamentary session on Education.

Tomlinson cited evidence from the ukactive Research Institute, produced earlier this year, before proposing an expansion to the Primary PE and Sport Premium for use by schools to support children to be active before and after the school, and in the summer holidays.

Education Minister Robert Goodwill MP, responsible for Children and Families, responded by reaffirming the government’s commitment to the Premium, and a pledge to explore every opportunity for it to be used beyond the school day. Specifically, this includes the most effective ways the government can measure its impact on children’s activity over this academic year.

ukactive will continue to work with MPs and Ministers over the coming months to ensure getting more children active remains a central priority for government and the Department for Education.
