{"id":19370,"date":"2020-06-23T14:58:08","date_gmt":"2020-06-23T13:58:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ukactive.com\/news\/ukactive-response-to-government-announcement-on-reopening-fitness-and-leisure-sector\/"},"modified":"2026-03-23T17:03:56","modified_gmt":"2026-03-23T17:03:56","slug":"ukactive-response-to-government-announcement-on-reopening-fitness-and-leisure-sector","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ukactive.com\/cy\/news\/ukactive-response-to-government-announcement-on-reopening-fitness-and-leisure-sector\/","title":{"rendered":"ukactive response to Government announcement on reopening fitness and leisure sector"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>ukactive has issued the following statement in response to the Government\u2019s <\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/speeches\/prime-ministers-statement-to-the-house-on-covid-19-23-june-2020\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>announcement<\/strong><\/a><strong> today (23 June) about the next phase of its reopening strategy<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Huw Edwards, CEO of ukactive, said: \u201cukactive has been in discussions with the Government today, in the period building up to the Prime Minister\u2019s announcement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany people will be understandably frustrated by the decision not to reopen the fitness and leisure sector from 4 July.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHowever, the Government has indicated that gyms and leisure facilities will reopen from <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/OliverDowden\/status\/1275417612420362241?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">mid-July<\/a>, subject to final agreement between health officials and our sector.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn these discussions, we are completely confident in addressing any\u00a0questions\u00a0the Government and health officials may have, based on the comprehensive health and safety <a href=\"https:\/\/ukactive.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Covid-19-A-framework-for-the-re-opening-of-the-gym-and-fitness-industry-V1.1-FINAL.pdf\">guidance<\/a> we published and shared with the Government on 7 May.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFurthermore, we have invited Government and health officials to visit any of the hundreds of gym and leisure centre show sites across the country, and witness how facilities would operate with thorough social distancing measures and hygiene standards in place.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur sector\u2019s safety standards are among the highest in Europe, where other nations have already reopened their gyms and leisure facilities safely.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAny further delay to our reopening will threaten our nation\u2019s recovery from COVID-19. With obesity the second largest cause of hospitalisation from this virus, gyms and leisure centres are equipped to not only combat COVID-19, but to support rehabilitation for those recovering from the virus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClosed facilities cannot support that fight. Closed facilities will also worsen the health inequalities in this nation, especially as one in four members of public leisure facilities is from a BAME background, a community where health disparities from COVID-19 have been felt most.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAny further delay\u00a0to reopening would also have grave economic consequences, including the potential loss of 2,800 facilities and over 100,000 jobs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGreater Government engagement and clarity is now crucial. This is a health crisis, and this sector is safe to reopen and lead the fightback against COVID-19.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cConversations will continue with Government this afternoon to establish a clear
