<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/schools-encouraged-to-open-up-sports-facilities-all-year-round\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Department for Education<\/strong><\/a><strong> to open schools for physical activity over the holidays<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Jack Shakespeare, ukactive Director of Children, Young People, Families and Research, said: \u201cWe welcome the progress demonstrated by this School Sport and Activity Action Plan commitment, which ukactive has championed as a core policy call since the publication of our <a href=\"https:\/\/ukactive.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Generation-Inactive_1_ukactive.pdf\"><em>Generation Inactive<\/em><\/a> report three years ago.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know that 39 per cent of community sports facilities are locked behind school gates over the holidays, while children are losing up to 80 per cent of their cardiorespiratory fitness over the summer. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2019\/may\/03\/school-sports-facilities-child-healthy-fitness-holidays\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Opening up school gates<\/a> can re-shape school holiday experiences for those children and young people that really need it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is vital that progress on this initiative from Government does not attempt to reinvent the wheel, but instead takes on the lessons learnt from our members and partners who are already activating school facilities and engaging their local communities year-round.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have proven the Schools-as-Community Hubs model through our <a href=\"https:\/\/ukactive.com\/cy\/reports\/generation-inactive-2\/\">ground-breaking research<\/a> and activations with children and young people, including our collaboration with partners through the <a href=\"https:\/\/ukactive.com\/cy\/news\/ukactive-and-sainsburys-launch-active-kids-holiday-clubs\/\">Sainsbury\u2019s Active Kids Holiday Clubs<\/a> \u2013 unlocking 70 schools and delivering more than 100,000 days of activity last summer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe look forward to working with Sport England and the Active Partnership Network to ensure that this Government drive is supported fully by our members, using the full breadth of the sector\u2019s expertise in engaging children, young people and their families.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe scale of the problem we face requires a matched ambition
