{"id":19226,"date":"2020-01-15T09:00:48","date_gmt":"2020-01-15T09:00:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ukactive.com\/news\/ukactive-and-sense-launch-research-partnership-to-understand-activity-needs-of-families-with-disabled-children\/"},"modified":"2020-01-15T09:00:48","modified_gmt":"2020-01-15T09:00:48","slug":"ukactive-and-sense-launch-research-partnership-to-understand-activity-needs-of-families-with-disabled-children","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ukactive.com\/cy\/news\/ukactive-and-sense-launch-research-partnership-to-understand-activity-needs-of-families-with-disabled-children\/","title":{"rendered":"ukactive and Sense launch research partnership to understand activity needs of families with disabled children"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The ukactive Research Institute has announced a three-year research project with national disability charity, Sense, which seeks to better understand the needs of parents and families of disabled children.<\/p>\n<p>Parents of disabled children are encouraged to feed back on the challenges they face when it comes to accessing sport and physical activity, by completing an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.surveymonkey.co.uk\/r\/Sensesurvey_\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">online survey<\/a> by Tuesday, 31 March.<\/p>\n<p>The project will explore the barriers and motivations of the families, and also look at access to provision, the challenges of families being active together, the impact on siblings with no disability, and if there are differences between community and education provision.<\/p>\n<p>Following the initial research, Sense will establish a national activity programme for disabled children and evaluate the impact of it on the child and the wider family.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sense.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sense<\/a> is a charity dedicated to ensuring that no one \u2013 no matter how complex their disabilities \u2013 is isolated, left out, or unable to fulfil their potential. Its research with children and young people with complex disabilities shares parallels with the work of the <a href=\"https:\/\/ukactive.com\/cy\/research-institute\/\">ukactive Research Institute<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In 2015, Sense launched a public inquiry into the provision of play opportunities for children with complex disabilities. It found that 92% of parents felt their child did not have the same opportunities to play as their non-disabled peers, while 81% of parents reported difficulties in accessing local play opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>A study by ukactive in 2016 found that primary school children lose up to 74% of their fitness over the summer holiday period.<\/p>\n<p>The new research project will be divided into two phases, beginning with a consultation to understand the complex needs of families with disabled children in order to inform the development and delivery of sport &#038; physical activity sessions, family days and other initiatives.<\/p>\n<p>The second phase will see ukactive\u2019s Research Institute undertake the measurement and evaluation of interventions that Sense provides for families with children who have complex disabilities and non-disabled siblings.<\/p>\n<p>Alissa Ayling, Head of Sport and Physical Activity at Sense, said: \u201cWe\u2019re delighted to be collaborating with ukactive and look forward to working together to learn more about the challenges faced by the families of children with complex disabilities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe results of this new research programme will be used to create a nationwide programme of sport and physical activity opportunities to help tackle the issue of inactivity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know that children with complex disabilities often miss out on participating in sport and physical exercise, which is vital for staying healthy, learning new skills and making friends.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s our goal to establish more sport and play opportunities for children with complex disabilities to be able to lead happy, healthy and active lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Matthew Wade, Senior Researcher at ukactive, said: \u201cOur new partnership with Sense marks an exciting new chapter in our work to better understand the inequalities facing families with disabled children who want to be more active.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cukactive\u2019s members want to create a level playing for all children, with opportunities for every child to be more active, no matter where they live or what disabilities they have.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThrough our research with Sense, we aim to produce evidence that will help make physical activities more accessible for every family and child.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>For more details about the project, contact ukactive\u2019s Research Institute at: <a href=\"mailto:research@ukactive.org.uk\">research@ukactive.org.uk<\/a><\/strong><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>To complete the survey, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.surveymonkey.co.uk\/r\/Sensesurvey_\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">cliciwch yma<\/a><\/strong><\/h3>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The ukactive Research Institute has announced a three-year research project with national disability charity, Sense, which seeks to better understand the needs of parents and families of disabled children.
