{"id":19074,"date":"2019-05-03T10:40:23","date_gmt":"2019-05-03T09:40:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ukactive.com\/news\/ukactive-calls-for-government-to-stop-disadvantaged-children-being-left-behind-by-summer-holiday-lockout\/"},"modified":"2019-05-03T10:40:23","modified_gmt":"2019-05-03T09:40:23","slug":"ukactive-calls-for-government-to-stop-disadvantaged-children-being-left-behind-by-summer-holiday-lockout","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ukactive.com\/cy\/news\/ukactive-calls-for-government-to-stop-disadvantaged-children-being-left-behind-by-summer-holiday-lockout\/","title":{"rendered":"ukactive calls for government to stop disadvantaged children being \u2018left behind\u2019 by summer holiday lockout"},"content":{"rendered":"<ul>\n<li><strong>74% of UK adults disagree that there are enough youth facilities for children and young people<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>77% say there are a lack of places for children and young people to be physically active during school holidays<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>ukactive research shows that less affluent children lose fitness during summer holidays 18 times faster than more affluent children<\/strong><em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>ukactive has presented government with proposals to unlock school facilities over the summer holidays in order to reduce child health inequalities, with new research showing that around three-quarters of UK adults disagree that there are enough youth facilities for children and young people (74%).<\/p>\n<p>The not-for-profit health body presented the plans at 10 Downing Street on Thursday (2 May), alongside former England Rugby captain Lawrence Dallaglio, Paralympian Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson and ex-criminal turned Nike athlete John McAvoy.<\/p>\n<p>The delegation also included Dr Rosie Meek, Professor of Criminological Psychology at Royal Holloway University;\u00a0Steve Howell, Headteacher of the City of Birmingham School, England\u2019s largest pupil referral unit; Adrian Packer, Chief Executive of CORE Education Trust; and Paula Robertson, Operations Director of Dallaglio RugbyWorks.<\/p>\n<p>The survey, conducted by ukactive with ComRes, also found that almost four in five Britons say there are a lack of places for children and young people to be physically active during the school holidays (77%).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/researchinstitute.ukactive.com\/downloads\/managed\/Pre_print_V2_-_One_Year_Surveillance_of_Body_Mass_Index_and_Cardiorespiratory_Fitness_in_UK_Primary_School_Children_and_the_Impact_of_School_Deprivation_Level.pdf\">Research by ukactive<\/a> shows that children and young people suffer a loss in fitness levels of up to 80% over the summer holidays, with the fitness of those from low-income families falling 18 times faster than their more affluent peers.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportengland.org\/our-work\/partnering-local-government\/scenarios\/how-can-we-increase-community-use-of-schools-sports-facilities\/\">Sport England statistics<\/a> show that 39% of sports facilities in England sit behind school gates and the majority of these are inaccessible over the summer holidays.<\/p>\n<p>ukactive\u2019s pioneering \u2018 <a href=\"https:\/\/ukactive.com\/cy\/reports\/generation-inactive-2\/\">Schools as Community Hubs<\/a>\u2019 delivery model asks government to unlock school facilities for children and young people over the holidays, introducing local activity providers to host subsidised clubs offering activities in a fun, social and safe environment.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"JACK SHAKESPEARE AND STEVE HOWELL TALK ABOUT SCHOOLS AS COMMUNITY HUBS\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/_DmgwdIR3Zs?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The clubs, which were piloted successfully at 24 schools across England and Wales in 2018, offer activities from a range of local providers and tailored by age group, including sports, games and performing arts classes, as well as nutritious lunches.<\/p>\n<p>ukactive Chair Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson said: \u201cMillions of children are being let down and left behind over the summer holidays \u2013 forced to choose between days spent in front of a screen or on street corners.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are ignoring invaluable community assets sitting right on our doorstep \u2013 school facilities \u2013 which should be unlocked during the holidays to give every child the opportunity for a healthy, happy summer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Former England Rugby captain and founder of Dallaglio RugbyWorks Lawrence Dallaglio said: \u201cThe positive influence of physical activity on teenagers in need of support should never be underestimated.\u00a0It\u2019s how I was introduced to rugby and so I feel passionate about taking responsibility to allow all young people to benefit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Dallaglio RugbyWorks programme shows evidence that regular contact results in long-term positive engagement.
