It\u2019s a case of \u2018about time too\u2019 or \u2018what took them so long?\u2019 if you prefer.\u00a0 Either way, taking nearly three years for a Government department to approve this one is nothing to praise.\u00a0 I recognize the transition from BIS to the DfE to the IfA hasn\u2019t helped matters, but if the Government doesn\u2019t get its act together, they will never reach their ambitious target of 3 million apprenticeship starts by 2020.<\/p>\n<p>In an interview with FE Week in June, Anne Milton said that she had been to the launch of the IfA \u2018faster better thing\u2019 and that \u2018she always has a big stick in her hand when she meets the IfA\u2019.\u00a0 Personally, I don\u2019t find rhetoric like that particularly convincing from a politician.\u00a0 She talked about \u2018pushing on the IfA\u2019 but also about \u2018pushing on employers\u2019, \u2018because at the end of the day they need to get together to design the standards\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Well, in the case of the PT apprenticeship standard, our sector\u2019s employers got together way back in 2015 to design the standard so it\u2019s somewhat frustrating, to say the least, to read that statement.<\/p>\n<p>Approval delays for apprenticeship standards have been blamed for the slowdown in apprenticeship starts, which were down 52% for March compared with the same period in 2017, and the apparent lack of success of the apprenticeship levy in boosting employer investment.\u00a0 There were 315,900 apprenticeship starts reported to date between August 2017 and May 2018 for the 2017\/18 academic year. This compares to 457,200 and 420,800 starts reported in the equivalent period in 2016\/17 and 2015\/16 respectively.<\/p>\n<p>The criticism that employers haven\u2019t used their levy quickly enough is frankly unfair in our sector where employers haven\u2019t been <em>able<\/em> to use their levy effectively on Personal Training apprenticeships due to the length of time it has taken for the standard and its assessment plan to be approved.<\/p>\n<p>Now we have the approval it still won\u2019t be plain sailing\u2026.<\/p>\n<p>With a general funding band of \u00a34k for each apprentice, that provides only around 15% of that figure to fund the end-point assessment of the apprenticeship.\u00a0 Quite rightly, the assessment plan for the Personal Training apprenticeship is rigorous, lengthy and time-consuming.\u00a0 So the challenge for employers and training providers within our sector is to deliver a high quality apprenticeship for around \u00a33,400, and for end-point assessment organisations, like Active IQ, to provide a high quality assessment for up to \u00a3600&#8230;\u00a0 Don\u2019t worry: we know how to rise to the challenges presented by education reform and will continue to support Personal Training apprenticeship employers and apprentices to ensure they succeed and our industry delivers on its promises to the public.\u00a0 We\u2019re in \u2013 what about you?<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Jenny Patrickson, Managing Director, Active IQ News that the personal trainer apprenticeship standard has finally been approved for delivery by the Institute for Apprenticeships is good but forgive me for [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":10,"featured_media":18507,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"_price":"","_stock":"","_tribe_ticket_header":"","_tribe_default_ticket_provider":"","_tribe_ticket_capacity":"","_ticket_start_date":"","_ticket_end_date":"","_tribe_ticket_show_description":"","_tribe_ticket_show_not_going":false,"_tribe_ticket_use_global_stock":"","_tribe_ticket_global_stock_level":"","_global_stock_mode":"","_global_stock_cap":"","_tribe_rsvp_for_event":"","_tribe_ticket_going_count":"","_tribe_ticket_not_going_count":"","_tribe_tickets_list":"[]","_tribe_ticket_has_attendee_info_fields":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[100],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-18880","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-blog"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.2 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/product\/yoast-seo-wordpress\/ -->\n<title>Personal Trainer Apprenticeship Standard \u2013 not before time!
