ukactive Executive Director Steven Ward today welcomed the announcement of the roll-out of the National Diabetes Prevention Programme and said that it marked a breakthrough moment for physical activity and the National Health Service.<\/p>\n

The programme is to be unveiled this year to a first wave of 27 areas covering 26 million people, and will make up to 20,000 places available, with full coverage in England by 2020 and 100,000 referrals per year available thereafter. It will be available to those at risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes.<\/p>\n

“Anyone working in this sector will know the life-changing impact that comes with getting more physical activity. ”<\/p>\n

“With an NHS which is being stretched to its limit by lifestyle-related disease, it’s absolutely the right decision that the NHS should invest into a programme which aims to encourage as many people as possible to lead a healthy active lifestyle and give people to tools to live longer, healthier lives.”<\/p>\n

“I’m confident that the success of the programme will mean that this is just the first step for the wider partnership between the National Health Service and the physical activity sector.”<\/p>\n
