{"id":18493,"date":"2017-08-09T08:00:39","date_gmt":"2017-08-09T07:00:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ukactive.com\/news\/ukactive-urges-government-shake-up-of-sedentary-office-culture\/"},"modified":"2017-08-09T08:00:39","modified_gmt":"2017-08-09T07:00:39","slug":"ukactive-urges-government-shake-up-of-sedentary-office-culture","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ukactive.com\/cy\/news\/ukactive-urges-government-shake-up-of-sedentary-office-culture\/","title":{"rendered":"ukactive urges government shake-up of sedentary office culture"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>ukactive Chair Tanni Grey-Thompson appeared on international news network CNBC this morning (9<sup>y<\/sup>\u00a0August) to urge the Government to tackle the \u2018toxic\u2019 toll of sedentary working cultures by incentivising employees to be active.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/video\/2017\/08\/09\/ukactive-our-sedentary-workplace-culture-is-toxic.html?__source=cnbcembedplayer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Click here to watch<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The legendary Paralympian and cross-bench peer noted that \u2018physical inactivity costs the UK \u00a320bn each year and is the cause of 37,000 premature deaths\u2019 with desk-bound office culture fuelling the mounting inactivity crisis.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Statistics show that sitting at a desk for eight hours a day increases the risk of premature death by up to 60 per cent and is a major cause of a myriad of health problems.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Interviewed on major American news channel CNBC\u2019s mid-morning show, Tanni called on the government to do more to promote workplace physical activity by incentivising active pursuits such as gym passes, fitness equipment and accessories.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increasingly busy schedules for workers mean it\u2019s tougher than ever to maintain an active lifestyle. Physical inactivity is one of the biggest drivers of ill-health, leading to high absenteeism rates (which cost the UK \u00a329bn a year) and reduced productivity \u2013 which all conspire to hit bottom lines.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tanni praised the huge impacts of the \u2018Cycle to Work\u2019 scheme, but noted that cycling isn\u2019t for everyone, so broader options should also be considered. Tanni added that an expansion of the policy to include gym memberships and fitness accessories \u2013 a ukactive policy dubbed \u2018Workout from Work\u2019 &#8211; is a \u2018creative way that we can help people be more active\u2019.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ukactive has worked with accountancy specialist\u00a0Saffery Champness\u00a0to conduct a cost-benefit analysis of the economic outcomes of enacting &#8216;Workout from Work&#8217;. The analysis found that for every \u00a31 spent on the scheme, the government would save over \u00a32.60 in NHS treatment costs and productivity increases, helping to tackle the sedentary office cultures fuelling the UK\u2019s physical inactivity crisis.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tanni also urged the public to try and \u2018take on the responsibility to get active\u2019, through small or incremental lifestyle changes. This could be as little as \u2018getting off the bus one stop early\u2019 she said, or simply \u2018walking between meetings\u2019.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The key, Tanni said, was for people to \u2018get started\u2019. This is one of the reasons behind ukactive\u2019s National Fitness Day campaign \u2013 sponsored by AXA PPP and Argos \u2013 which aims to promote the fun of fitness to the British people. One initiative Tanni flagged was \u2018Flying Start\u2019, which will see AXA PPP\u2019s range of office partners encourage their employees to reap the benefits of kick-starting their day with an
