Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson, ukactive Chair, said:

ukactive responds to BIT Calorie Counting report

09 August 2016

Following the publication of the Behavioural Insights Team (BIT) report Counting Calories: How under-reporting can explain the apparent fall in calorie intake, ukactive Executive Director Steven Ward has reiterated the primary importance of regular physical activity as part of a healthy lifestyle.

Critics also pointed out that the report highlighted human tendencies of under-reporting calorie consumption to support its key points, without allowing for the established fact that humans also tend to over-report their levels of physical activity.

Children’s inactivity agenda comes under renewed focus as research from Premier Sport & ukactive Research Institute makes the headlines

09 August 2016

Research carried out by the ukactive research institute alongside Premier Sport found that schoolchildren fitness levels were seeing a considerable drop off over the summer months. The ‘My Personal Best’ measurement programme provided an accurate reading of kids fitness by measuring their V02 max through a shuttle run test rather than focusing on BMI.

Last week the study hit the front-page of The Telegraph and was also reported in both The Daily Mail and The Sun. ukactive Research Director and lead author Dr Steven Mann was quoted as saying “this research shows for the first time that the UK’s youth inactivity pandemic stems from inactive summer holidays. In years gone by school summer breaks would be spent being active outdoors”.
